What is Korean KS Certification?

KS certification is the national standard certification system of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), managed and issued by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. It is a mandatory or voluntary mark of quality, safety, and environmental performance that has been issued by the South Korean government for industrial products. The KS mark could be described as a "quality passport" in the South Korean market, but especially in building materials, where nearly all public works, government procurement, and large commercial projects demand suppliers provide KS-certified products.

For thermal insulation materials, the main items assessed by KS certification are:

Thermal Performance: Whether the thermal conductivity and thermal resistance meet Korean building energy efficiency standards.

Fire Performance: Combustion rating is usually required, Class A or A1 non-combustible.

The mechanical properties are: Compressive strength, tensile strength, and dimensional stability.

Why does the Korean market give so much importance to KS certification?

South Korea boasts one of the world's most stringent building energy efficiency requirements. Because of its geographical and climatic conditions, the country has cold winters and hot summers, so the demand for insulation materials in buildings is huge. According to statistics from the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the market for building insulation materials in Korea surpassed US$3 billion in 2024 and is growing at a rate of about 8-10% annually. The South Korean government explicitly requires that all new buildings meet the near-zero energy standard by 2030 through the Green Building Certification System and Zero Energy Building Compulsory Roadmap.
