United Insulation Glass Wool products have passed the Malaysian SIRIM QAS certification and fully entered the ASEAN high-end building market
2023-10-01
What is SIRIM Certification, and to which country does it belong?
SIRIM certification is issued by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM Berhad) and its subsidiary SIRIM QAS International, a statutory certification body in Malaysia. In Malaysia, the SIRIM mark is either compulsory or semi-compulsory. The “BIMP-EAGA” (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines ASEAN East Growth Area) and the whole ASEAN region hold this mark in high regard and consider it a kind of "green passport" for Chinese thermal insulation materials to pass into the high-end markets of Malaysia and ASEAN.

What does SIRIM certification test for in glass wool?
SIRIM certification, following Malaysian standards MS 2274 relating to glass wool insulation and MS 1020 on thermal insulation materials for building applications, emphasizes the testing and long-term monitoring of the following key indicators:
Thermal conductivity ≤0.040 W/(m·K)
Fire resistance to satisfy MS 374 Class 0 or Class 1 surface flammability
Formaldehyde emission ≤ 0.06 ppm, meets Malaysia's most stringent indoor air standards.
Safety of fiber: biosoluble, non-irritating fiber
Water repellency, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance
Consistency in actual production: at least two surprise factory audits annually
It includes products that, after being certified, can permanently carry the SIRIM certification label and are directly recognized by the Malaysian Ministry of Construction, Fire Services Department, and Green Building Index projects.

Why is SIRIM certification considered the "hard threshold" in Malaysian and ASEAN markets?
Malaysia: All government projects, hospitals, schools, airports, and high-rise residential buildings should use SIRIM-certified insulation materials. For private high-end projects, for example, Kuala Lumpur TRX and Johor ISKANDAR, it is also generally required.
ASEAN Mutual Recognition recognizes SIRIM test reports through partial or full recognition by Singapore's BCA, Indonesia's SNI, Thailand's TISI, and the Philippines' BPS, thus significantly reducing secondary certification costs.
In 2024, the Malaysian building insulation materials market surpassed 480 million Malaysian Ringgit, about US$115 million, growing by more than 12% every year. The entire ASEAN market also surpassed US$1.8 billion, in which glass wool accounted for nearly 40%.
Chinese glass wool, without SIRIM certification, can hardly participate in public tenders in Malaysia. It also faces problems penetrating the primary distributor systems of Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Why can United Insulation glass wool pass SIRIM's high standards?
United Insulation glass wool certified this time far exceeds the Malaysian national standard in key performance aspects:
Thermal conductivity as low as 0.032–0.038 W/(m·K)
Fire rating reaches MS 374 Class 0 (highest surface rating)
Formaldehyde emission can be as low as 0.008 ppm, far below SIRIM's requirement for 0.06 ppm.
Average fibre diameter ≤5μm, EUCEB bio-soluble certification, zero irritation to the human body
Water repellency ≥ 99.5%, no settling or pulverization for more than 50 years
The batches all have to undergo unannounced SIRIM factory audits twice a year, ensuring long-term stable quality.
"SIRIM certification is a commitment to quality for our customers in Malaysia and across ASEAN," said Southeast Asia Regional Director, United Insulation. "In the future, United Insulation glass wool will be even easier to specify, with smoother bidding and faster approval, for higher green building scores."
Today, SIRIM-certified glass wool is bulk-exported to ASEAN countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, and Vietnam, and is widely used in high-rise residential buildings, hospitals, data centers, industrial plants, and green building projects.
United Insulation Co., Ltd. is among the leading Chinese exporters of glass wool and rock wool. It has a number of top-level global certifications such as CE, KS, FM, SIRIM, USGBC, and GREENGUARD Gold and exports to over 80 countries worldwide.
