Many may have only seen it on the specification sheet without knowing what it looks like. Its appearance and physical properties are very important to be understood during material selection and construction.

Distinctive among the features of rock wool insulation materials are color and texture. The color is usually yellowish-brown or light yellow. Sometimes, due to the different raw materials used in the process or a difference in manufacturing, color differences may also appear in light gray or green tones.

It is very much like fluffy and interwoven wool fibers in shape and therefore gets the name "rock wool." These fibers are produced by melting natural minerals like basalt at high temperatures, with subsequent treatment of high-speed centrifugation. Thus, the overall structure presents a disordered, dense, and porous cotton-like texture.

In actual purchase and application, the following are the forms of rock wool you will meet:

Rock wool board: This is the most common form, normally a hard or semi-hard plate-like material with densely surfaced fibers, convenient for wall mounting or laying.

Rockwool rolls: It is more flexible compared with boards, and usually comes with veneer such as aluminum foil that can be rolled up like a blanket to wrap pipes or irregular structures.

Rock wool pipe: The product is a cylindrical one, developed especially for the insulation of pipes. It can be fixed directly to the pipe.

In a nutshell, rock wool insulation material is yellowish-brown in color, like "felt" or "cotton wool," and is made by pressing together countless fine rock fibers. It feels rough but is very strong. Being able to recognize these appearance features will help you easily distinguish it from other insulation materials, such as white glass wool or pink foam board.
